On January 11, 2025, while snorkeling off the north shore of Oahu, Gavin was bitten on his left forearm by a Galapagos shark during a sudden feeding frenzy. He was rushed to Queen’s Medical Center and later transferred to the University of Utah Hospital, where he underwent four surgeries including debridement, tendon repair, and a skin graft.

Thanks to intensive therapy, he has regained elbow movement and his skin graft has healed. His next surgery is scheduled for December, when doctors will perform a tendon transplant to help restore movement in his wrist and fingers. Gavin remains positive and deeply grateful for the quick response of rescuers, his medical teams, and the support of everyone who has helped him through recovery.
